Rome’s city government has enacted laws to try to prevent a neighborhood from becoming a Chinatown. In recent years, thousands of Chinese immigrants have settled in the Esquilino district and opened their own markets, and the Italian residents are not pleased. “I have to go miles to buy mortadella,” residents’ group representative Dima Capozzio told The Washington Post. “Rome is Rome, and not a provincial Chinese capital.” In response to locals’ complaints, the city has banned many types of traditionally Chinese businesses, such as wholesale clothing shops, from the district. Even red paper lanterns have been outlawed. Chinese activists called the new rules “simply discriminatory.”

The stadium will be built along the Chicago riverfront in a development known as “The 78,” and neighbors are concerned it could impact parks, increase rent and cause other issues.

City and team officials have pointed to the thousands of jobs and the additional tourist revenue the project could provide, but residents want a seat at the table to potentially harness some of those benefits.

“We’re struggling with housing, and the next thing is parking. We don’t have enough parking spots,” one resident said in the meeting.

“Oftentimes, the poorest communities end up being the ones that are displaced … Southern Pacific got here because of the Chinese, and yet Southern Pacific became involved in the displacement of the Chinese. That’s the whole irony,” said Moy, reflecting the painful history of displacement in Chinatown, and echoing the experiences of the residents the teens are documenting.

The irony Moy highlights stems from the relocation of Chinatown’s original community during the construction of Union Station in the 1930s. Despite the critical role Chinese laborers played in building the railroads, the Southern railroad companies that benefited from their work ultimately contributed to the displacement of Chinatown residents.

At Yue Huang, the siu mai is wonderfully juicy and tender, made by splitting the pork meat from its fat, mashing them separately, then recombining the mixtures with spices. The pork buns are soft and fluffy, delicately wrapped and steamed so they split at the seams like the petals of a flower. Last Father’s Day, they sold 700.

Typically live music at restaurants is faint and barely noticeable, like a piano gently playing in the background. But at dim sum restaurant Jade Cathay, crashing cymbals and loud vocals echo throughout the building. The delicately steamed, subtle-tasting dumplings are contrasted by the loud, clashing sounds of rock. At one point, lead singer Alvin Alvarez shouts, “Dim sum!” and the crowd goes wild.

Jade Cathay is nestled in a quiet neighborhood adjacent to the San Jose airport. The restaurant is a stylish place dressed with chandeliers and sleek wooden accents. The family-run staple has been around since 2011, but a few years ago they started throwing indie rock shows. Twice per month, the jade chairs and lazy Suzan-equipped tables are pushed against the wall to make room for dancers and drum sets. Guests are greeted with a catering-style serving table loaded with golden chive dumplings, barbecue pork bao, fries, chow mein, and siu mai. There’s also dim sum carts parked next to the table stacked high with steaming baskets. Every dish is sold in a set of four to seven pieces, all in the $8 price range. You pay at the card reader mounted on the wall. Some tables are left set up for anyone looking to sit down for their feast.

With hunger pangs now satiated, we next headed to Chinatown Ice Cream Factory for dessert, a 20-minute walk from the East Village. Ice cream’s origins can be traced back to around 200BC during the Tang Dynasty, though whether ancient China, Persia, or the Middle East invented it remains a subject of intense debate.

Inspired by this history, Philip Seid, a Chinese immigrant originally from the city of Taishan, sought to introduce Asian-inspired ice cream flavours to New Yorkers. He opened the original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory branch in 1978, which now offers 30-plus rotating in-house flavours, including pandan, red bean, ube, and durian.
